How Often Should I Change My HVAC Air Filters?
A: Check it monthly, and plan on replacing a standard 1-inch filter every 1 to 3 months. In Central Oklahoma, lean toward the short end of that.
Red-dirt dust is the reason. It loads filters faster here than in most climates, and the same dust ends up on blower wheels and condenser coils. Then add:
- Pets, allergies, or anyone in the house who notices dust — monthly
- A gravel drive or an ongoing remodel — monthly, sometimes sooner
- A clean, sealed house with no pets — closer to 3 months
- Thicker media filters in a dedicated cabinet — longer, but confirm the interval with us rather than guessing
A filter is the cheapest part of the system and the one most likely to cause a service call. Restricted airflow makes the blower work against pressure it wasn't designed for, and a blower motor replacement runs $350-$900. A diagnostic visit is $95, waived if you approve the repair the same visit.
