The equipment side is set by federal rule. Any new split-system air conditioner installed in Oklahoma has to meet 14.3 SEER2, the DOE South region minimum, versus 13.4 SEER2 in the North region. Note that SEER2 replaced SEER in 2023 and tests at higher external static pressure, so the rating on identical equipment reads lower than the old number — a 14.3 SEER2 unit is not a downgrade from a 15 SEER unit. The other side is delivery. A high-rated system pushing air through leaking ducts gives back much of what it earned. Duct sealing runs $800–$2,500 and duct cleaning $400–$800. Oklahoma red dirt also loads filters and blower wheels faster than most climates, and a filter upgrade is $200–$500.
