An ignitor is a critical component in gas-fired HVAC systems, like furnaces, responsible for igniting the gas to start the combustion process that heats your home. It's a safety and efficiency feature that ensures the gas burns properly.

What an Ignitor Has to Cope With in an Oklahoma Winter

Most Oklahoma furnaces use a hot surface ignitor, and it has a harder life here than a mild-winter picture suggests. The same system that carried a long, punishing cooling season is then asked to light on the first hard cold snap, often after months sitting idle, and red-dirt dust settles on the burner assembly in the meantime. Rural properties across McClain, Grady and Garvin counties are commonly on propane rather than city gas, which changes the orifice and the flame the ignitor has to prove — worth saying when you book. Note also that the federal minimum for a new gas furnace is 80% AFUE, so a failed ignitor is rarely a reason on its own to replace an otherwise sound furnace.     • Trade-off: Simple to control and widely used, but the silicon carbide or nitride element is brittle and draws real current while heating, and it is the ignitor type most likely to fail with age.
  • Intermittent Pilot Ignitors:

    • Operation: Uses a small pilot flame that only lights when heating is needed, saving energy when the system is off.

How Ignitors Work in HVAC Systems

  • Initiation: When the thermostat signals a need for heat, the ignitor is activated.
  • Ignition: For spark ignitors, this means creating a spark; for hot surface ignitors, it means heating up to a temperature that ignites the gas.
  • Safety: If the flame doesn't light or goes out, the system has safety mechanisms to shut off the gas supply to prevent gas buildup.
