How Can I Make My HVAC System More Sustainable?

A: The biggest sustainability change in residential HVAC right now is not something you choose — it already happened to the refrigerant. Under the AIM Act, manufacture of residential R-410A air conditioners and heat pumps stopped on 1 January 2025, because R-410A carries a global warming potential of 2,088, well above the 700 limit. New ducted equipment now uses R-454B (GWP 466), and many ductless mini-splits use R-32 (GWP 675). Both are classified A2L, meaning mildly flammable, which changes how the equipment is handled and installed.

What that means if you own an R-410A system today:

• Keep running it. Existing R-410A systems are fine to operate and fine to service.
• No rush to replace on refrigerant grounds alone. An EPA rule effective 27 July 2026 lets pre-2025 R-410A stock be installed until it runs out.
• When you do replace, the refrigerant decision is already made for you.
