A: Split the list in two — the short one you handle yourself, and the twice-yearly one that needs a technician.

Yours, monthly through the cooling season:

• Check the filter. In Washington, Blanchard, and the rural stretches of McClain and Grady counties, red-dirt dust means a filter rated for three months often isn't clean at one.
• Keep two feet clear around the outdoor unit and rinse the fins from the outside in.
• Watch the condensate line for standing water at the drain.

Ours, spring and fall: refrigerant charge, capacitor and contactor readings, blower wheel condition, thermostat calibration, heat exchanger inspection, and a look at the ductwork for disconnected runs.

One Oklahoma-specific note: hail season bends condenser fins, and that damage is frequently claimable on homeowner's insurance. If your outdoor coil looks flattened, photograph it before anyone straightens it.
